As we age, however, there is less and less collagen production in our bodies.

Collagen is a fibrous glycoprotein. It is an important structural
protein. By far the most abundant
protein in the human body, it accounts for approximately 25% of body weight.

Referring to collagen in the singular is actually misleading because collagen is made up of
three polypeptide strands that combine in different ways to form several types of collagen.
Each type has its own structure and is found in specific organs.

The most abundant collagen in the human body is Native Soluble Collagen Type 1,
which accounts for 90%. Type I collagen also makes up 75% of your skin,
and plays a role in the formation of tendons, bones, corneas and internal organs.

Collagen falls into two categories: soluble and insoluble.

Soluble Collagen

• High water content
• Tiny microfibers
• Ideal for derma-care applications, offering benefits to mature skin far superior to insoluble collagen.

Insoluble Collagen

• Low water content
• Larger fibers
• Not recommended for derma-care applications because the large fibers inhibit moisturization of the skin.
